Material
Most soaker hoses are made from recycled rubber, which is flexible, durable and handles UV reasonably well. Cheaper flat vinyl versions cost less but tend to crack sooner and kink more readily. If the hose will be permanently installed and left in place, the rubber type is worth the difference.
Diameter and length
Half-inch is the standard for garden use. Keep individual runs under about 100 feet, and where you need more coverage, split into multiple shorter runs from a manifold rather than joining one very long hose, which will water the first bed well and the last bed barely at all.

Getting the Best From a Soaker Hose

Mulching over the top is the step most people skip and it makes a real difference, it cuts evaporation, protects the hose from UV, and keeps the wetting pattern more even.
Do not bury a soaker hose in soil. Buried hoses clog with fine particles and root intrusion, and you cannot see when they fail. Under mulch is ideal; under soil is a hose you will be replacing.
Run times are longer than people expect. Because output is slow, an hour or more is often needed to wet the root zone properly. Check by digging a small hole after a run rather than judging by the damp surface, which is misleading.
Where Soaker Hoses Work Best

- Vegetable rows. Straight runs of a manageable length.
- Shrub and perennial borders. Snake between plants and mulch over.
- Greenhouse beds. Good fit inside a greenhouse kit, where overhead watering encourages disease.
- New hedges and trees. Slow, deep watering during establishment.
They are a poor fit for lawns, for very long runs, for sloping ground where gravity distorts the output, and for anywhere you need genuinely precise control over how much each plant receives.
